SelfEDGE

using textile terminology to quantify intersections, planes and borders relative to our perception of identity and experience.

Selvedge refers to a self-finished edge of fabric that keeps it from unraveling or fraying – a result of how the fabric is created. The term itself is a corruption of “self-edge” and has been in use since the 16th century.

Self can be considered the source of consciousness, the thing that is responsible for our thoughts and actions – it makes us individuals, who we are in the giant scheme of things. The self is constantly evolving within our complex societies and cultures.

Edge can be the line or part where an object or area begins or ends or distinct quality that sets something apart.

Contextural identifies as a supportive collection of strong, distinct fibre artists. Group members are challenged to consider these terms and present work that is a reflection of self, related to how they define their perceptions within and distinguish themselves from, the rest of the herd.
