Urban Nature: ‘can be understood as areas in urban environments that are home to plants and non-human animals. Urban nature is not just dedicated space such as public parks but other types of informal green spaces e.g. green streetscapes, nature areas, roof gardens, and community gardens.’
But what is the urban without nature? Are not we humans, and that which we create and designate as ‘urban’ from the natural world? We exploit nature whilst still requiring it in its unspoilt condition to feed our souls and enhance our mental, physical and social well being.
Our lives are enhanced by the green seedling skillfully pushing up through cracked concrete, the deer that crosses our path as we negotiate our way to work, the sparkle of the first snowfall, and the drip of the first signs of spring.
